The five best Restaurants in Carcassonne

Barbacane at La Cite

Unlike many other micheline stared restaurants this place has such a relaxed vibe that you can almost forget that you are in on of the best restraurants in France and think that you were eating at a good friends house. Obviously it would require for your friend to be an incredibly good chef with a commitment to locally sourced fresh ingredients. When the plates arrive you may be surprised by how small they are but after the three courses you are always left satisfied and full. Most reviews of this restaurant start with the impressive views of La Cite which commend the terrace so I would be remise not to mention it, but for me the food is the crowing glory of this the number one spot in Carcasonne, and if you manage to get a lunch table mid-week, the 45 euro for a three-course meal and two glasses of wine is also exceptional value. I love it here so much, I almost don’t want to let you know about it!

Bourdadoso

It almost feels sacrilidge to put an Italian as number two on a list of restaurants in French town, but with their commitment to local produce, even going as far as to make their own buffalo mozzarella this is one of the best Italian restaurants we’ve been to including in Italy! been to. Food is at the heart of cultural exchange and nothing shows this better than a popular Italian in the heart of France.   Nestled in the hills out side of Carcasonne, with a beautiful hill side drive leading up to it, the terrace has beautiful views of rolling hills. A simple menu with all the classics you would expect it is a lovely spot for a romantic evening or a chilled dinner with friends.

Pizzaria – Metarie

The sourdougfh pizzas are good if you are lucky enough to get one. The service can be a bit hit and miss to say the least. Sometimes the kitchen is so overwhelmed they can’t even make you a pizza! But the view of La Cite and the relaxed vibes and great music playing on this terrace more than makes up for it. Make sure you go early or just with the desire for a few drinks to be able to fully enjoy this spot.

L’isle d’oisseux

This delightful little canal side restaurant serves many of the French classics as well as some more English style menu. The English couple who run the place are friendly and welcoming creating the kind of environment you are happy to while away a few hours in, enjoying their well priced local wine list.

Last But not least… La Belle Eco

Not strictly speaking a restaurant as it is only open to guests, La Belle Eco offers a unique dining experience. Offering a tantalizing set menu, eaten around the table with new friends in the most idyllic setting, surrounded by an enchanted ancient forest with the sound of bird song. The delicious menu is devised by the in house chef who takes the lead from our no dig garden ensuring that all ingredients are local, fresh and not only organic but grown in a regenerative way ensuring that we are actively giving back to nature.
