As we welcome warmer temperatures that heat the soil, preparing it for the seeds that will soon sprout into life, we’re also embracing sustainable practices that contribute to a healthier planet. One innovative project we’re excited about is our dog poo composter — a simple, yet effective way to turn waste into resource.

Why a Dog Poo Composter?

In our circular ecosystem at La Belle Eco, every creature plays a vital role, from the hens and dogs to the very worms that enrich our soil. With four playful dogs calling our garden home, managing dog waste efficiently is crucial. Traditional methods often lead to plastic bag use and ultimately, landfill waste. However, a dog poo composter allows us to recycle this waste into something beneficial for our gardens, reducing our environmental footprint.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Dog Poo Composter

1. Materials Needed:
   • A container with a lid
   • Drill for making holes in the container
   • Rocks
   • Composting worms
   • Carbon-rich materials (paper, cardboard)
2. Preparation:
   • Prepare the container: Drill holes around the sides of the container for aeration, from the bottom up to two-thirds of the container. Remove the bottom to allow for drainage and root growth.
   • Site Preparation: Dig a hole in your garden almost as deep and wide as the bucket. You want all the holes to be covered.
3. Assembly:
   • Layer 1 – Drainage: Place the container in the hole and add a layer of rocks at the bottom to facilitate drainage.
   • Layer 2 – Dog Poop: Introduce dog waste, ideally collected from your own backyard. At La Belle Eco, Billy, our champion poop producer, contributes significantly.
   • Layer 3 – Worms: Add a handful of composting worms. These will break down the poop and enrich the surrounding soil.
   • Layer 4 – Carbon Materials: Add carbon-rich materials like saw dust, dried leaves, shredded paper, cardboard or ashes on top to balance the nitrogen-rich poop and aid in the composting process.
   • Seal the Composter: Cover the top with a lid or other suitable covering to keep out pests and maintain the necessary moisture levels.
